Sergeant caught with child abuse images at Coatbridge police station faces jail

A police sergeant has left his job and faces jail after admitting the possession of child abuse and bestiality images.

Anthony Kelly, 50, was convicted of possession of pictures of child sex abuse and “extreme pornographic” images of bestiality at Coatbridge police station.

He also admitted sending a WhatsApp message of intimate photos of a woman without her knowledge, consent, or approval.

The sickening offences took place while Kelly was in charge of locking up custody offenders at the Whittington Street police office.

Kelly, a divorced dad-of-one, admitted the crimes at Glasgow Sheriff Court last Thursday and will be sentenced in March.

He was arrested at his home by colleagues on January 29 last year.

Kelly’s employment with Police Scotland has now ceased but it is unclear whether he was sacked or resigned after the offences came to light.

When approached at his mother’s house in Uddingston, he said: “I don’t want to say anything about that, thanks.”

He and wife Lynn divorced in 2016, prior to the crimes being committed; they have a son aged 20.

The disgraced former officer has admitted three charges.

The first states that between August 18, 2018, and January 29, 2019, at an address in Glasgow and elsewhere he had in his possession indecent photographs or pseudo-photographs of children.

The second charge states that between January 2, 2019, and January 29, 2019, at the same address in Glasgow, he had extreme pornographic images depicting in an “explicit and realistic way” bestiality.

Kelly also admitted sending the intimate pictures of the woman on WhatsApp.

The charge states that, on October 23, 2016, at the same address in Glasgow, he behaved in a “threatening or abusive manner which was likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm”.

The charge also states that he used WhatsApp messenger to send intimate images of the woman “without her knowledge, consent, or approval”.

The distressing images of children and the images of bestiality were found on Kelly’s phone.

He will be sentenced on March 5.
