Convicted paedophile was released onto Hull’s streets ‘in error’

A convicted paedophile was released onto the streets of Hull by mistake, it has been confirmed.

Valerijs Gordijis, 46, who was serving a sentence for sexual offences against children, was released from HMP Hull on Monday, November 18.

Hours later, Humberside Police issued a warrant for his arrest and appealed for help to find him – but urged members of the public not to approach him.

He had been serving a sentence for sexual offences against children

The day after his release, Gordijis was apprehended by a member of the public at a bus stop on Hessle Road, arrested and returned to prison.

The Ministry of Justice confirmed that Gordijis was released “in error.”

The convicted sex offender was due to attend an immigration centre – but was released from prison instead.

A prison service spokesman said: “Valerijs Gordijis was released in error from HMP Hull yesterday but has since been recaptured.

“Releases in error are very rare but we taken them extremely seriously and working closely with police to bring offenders back into custody quickly.”
