School matron jailed for sexually abusing boy, 12, while working in North Yorkshire
A woman who sexually abused a young boy while working as a school matron has been jailed.
Susan Mary Bramwell groomed the 12-year-old boy and abused him over six months in the 1980s while working at a North Yorkshire school.
The 58-year-old, who was known by her maiden name of Ackernley at the time, would have the schoolboy in her room at night.
She was jailed for two years and eight months at York Crown Court on Friday and was put on the sex offenders’ register for life.
Bramwell, from Endmoor, Cumbria, was sentenced after pleading guilty to two counts of gross indecency and two counts of indecent assault on a boy under the age of 14.
The offences took place at a school in Ripon between 1982 and 1983.
It was not until 2000 that the victim told his wife about his disturbing experience at school.
He had only ever previously confided what had happened to a small number of close friends and family members.
The victim contacted North Yorkshire Police in February 2018 to initially report the matter after he had read a news report about a similar case.
He then decided to make a formal complaint a year later which instigated a detailed inquiry by the force’s Non-Recent Abuse Investigation Team led by Detective Constable Ali Morris.
Bramwell was arrested at her home address in Cumbria on April 24.
