Chatham rapist jailed for 15 years
A Chatham rapist has been jailed for 15 years following an investigation by the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate.
Samuel Crabtree subjected the victim to a prolonged sexual assault in an underpass in July 2019.
The 30-year-old, of Cecil Road in Rochester, admitted raping the victim and was sentenced at Maidstone Crown Court on Friday 27 September 2019.
The court heard the offence took place in an underpass at the junction of Dock Road and Melville Court during the early hours of Sunday 14 July 2019.
The incident ended when the victim broke free from the offender and ran towards two men, who were walking nearby, for help. During this time Crabtree managed to run away before he was picked up by a taxi in nearby Admiralty Terrace.
The driver, who did not know an offence had taken place, later saw media coverage on the incident and provided information that led to the arrest of Crabtree later on the same day of the offence.
Whilst in custody, officers identified Crabtree from CCTV that showed him following the victim in Dock Road.
Identification procedures and forensic evidence later confirmed he was the offender and he has been held on remand since his arrest.
