Former Redhill teacher jailed after second conviction over child abuse pictures

A former teacher from Redhill has been jailed for 10 months after he was caught with indecent images of children for the second time in less than two years.

Peter Berenyi, 61, of Ridgeway Road, was said by his solicitor to have been “addicted” to looking at pictures of child abuse, which led him to breach a sexual harm prevention order (SHPO) made after his first conviction in late 2017 for downloading hundreds of indecent images.

A little more than a year later, in January 2019, software installed on his computers under the terms of his SHPO flagged to police that he had again been searching for images of child abuse. He was found to have downloaded almost 200 additional pictures when officers visited his home.

He had also purchased another laptop which he had failed to declare to the police, something his SHPO required him to do. He used this laptop to visit websites including message boards where users shared child abuse images.

Judge Taylor sentenced Berenyi to a total of 10 months in prison for breaching his SHPO and possession of indecent images of children, reduced from 15 months on account of his guilty plea. He will serve up to half in custody and the rest on licence.
