Brave teen girl snared this Derby pervert after he attacked her sister on a bus

A disgusting pervert from Derby who groped a teenage girl on a bus was snared by her quick-thinking older sister after he went on to attack her too.

Terry Mangan touched his first victim for almost an hour on the Skylink service between Leicester and Derby.

Derby Crown Court was told she was too scared to report it and instead told her older sister about the ordeal.

Three months later, the older girl was also travelling on the same service and was also indecently touched by Mangan.

When the bus stopped at East Midlands Airport, Mangan got out for a cigarette.

The second sister used the opportunity to take a photograph of him out of the window and sent it to her younger sibling, asking if it was the same man who assaulted her three months before.

She confirmed it was and the older sister called the police, who were waiting to arrest Mangan when the Skylink arrived at Derby Bus Station.

The 27-year-old, of Burton Road, who has 58 previous offences, has now been jailed.

Mangan’s mother was at Derby Crown Court for his sentencing hearing but fell asleep and started snoring in the public gallery part way through it

She then awoke to see her son sent to prison for 14 months by Recorder John Butterfield QC.

The woman blurted out at Recorder Butterfield: “You’re a horrible little judge!”

Recorder Butterfield said of the second attack by Mangan: “This was a remarkable coincidence.

“You sexually assaulted the first girl, leaving her distressed, in fear and too scared to report what you did, except to her sister.

“Then, three months later, on the same bus route to Derby you carried out precisely the same offence against her older sister.

“You repeatedly stroked the older girl’s thigh even though she told you not to and said you wanted to smack her buttocks and have sex with her.

“The younger sister you stroked her leg almost repeatedly for most of the journey which lasted around an hour.

“You targeted lone, vulnerable females, you have 58 previous offences to your name and you have received that many non-custodial sentences they have not been a deterrent to you.

“Frankly I find your behaviour worrying.”

Abigail Hill, prosecuting, said the first sex assault took place on the Skylink in March and the second in June. Both victims were aged under 18.

She said on the second occasion, after the bus stopped at the airport, Mangan got out to have a cigarette before getting back on the bus.

Mrs Hill said of his victim: “She moved seats to be next to a female passenger and, while the bus was stopped, manage to send a photograph of the defendant to her younger sister asking if this was the same man who assaulted her on the same bus three month before.

“When she (the younger sister) said yes the older sister called the police who arrested the defendant when it got to Derby Bus Station.”

‘Thought he might lash out’
Mangan pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual assault and the court heard how he has 27 previous convictions for 58 offences, although none for sexual offences.

Mrs Hill read out a victim personal statement made by the older sister.

On it she said: “I was shaking, I could not escape because of the way be was behaving, I could not do anything to get away because I thought he might lash out at me.”

As well as being jailed, Mangan was placed on the Sex Offender Register for 10 years and handed a 10-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order.
