A pervert has been sentenced by a judge after child abuse pictures were found on his laptop.

More than 100 illegal still and moving images were recovered by police who seized computer equipment from Neil Maughan’s home near Carlisle in May last year.

Some of the illicit content downloaded by 54-year-old Maughan was classed in category A – the most serious.

His sentence was handed down at Carlisle Crown Court today (MON) after guilty pleas were entered to nine offences.

These were six counts of making indecent photographs of a child, and three offences of possessing an extreme pornographic image.

Having considered mitigation and background information, Judge Barbara Forrester imposed a 20-day rehabilitation requirement.

Maughan, of Cumrew, must also complete 150 hours’ unpaid work, and was made subject to the terms of a sexual harm prevention order and sex offender notification requirements – both for 10 years.

Judge Forrester concluded that work with the probation service would be in the best interests of both Maughan and the community.
