Father jailed for killing his baby

A father has been jailed for life for the brutal murder of his eight-week-old baby son.

Christopher Rees, 24, used the baby “as a club” to attack his mother in a fit of jealous rage, Cardiff Crown Court was told.

Baby Bradley George died from multiple head injuries in the horrific killing at the house at Gurnos in Merthyr Tydfil.

He was in bed with his mother Samantha George, 22, when drunken Rees stormed into their home.

Prosecutor Roger Thomas QC said Ms George was ringing 999 for help as Rees threw her to the floor.

Mr Thomas told the court that Rees had used his young son like a “club” to attack Ms George.

He said Rees had grabbed the baby from a 10-year-old girl who was in the house, taken him by his feet and swung him around hitting Ms George.

The baby’s head was also hit off walls in the bedroom of the house.

Mr Thomas added: “The baby was heard to be whimpering.

Rees said: ‘Look what you have done. You may as well kill me. I love you’.”

Ms George fled downstairs and raised the alarm with neighbours.

Mr Thomas said: “Police saw a scene of absolute chaos.

Samantha was bleeding heavily and they had to force their way into the house.

“Rees was sprayed with CS gas and tried to run off before he was arrested.”

The baby was taken to hospital but died about three hours later.

A post mortem examination revealed multiple skull fractures.

The court heard the couple had a stormy eight-month relationship. But she left him before Bradley was born.

Mr Thomas said: “He still pestered her and was jealous and resentful.

He was obsessed and that grew into violence.”

Rees was drinking heavily on the night of the murder in November – and was found to be three times over the drink-drive limit.

Rees, of Dowlais, Merthyr Tydfil, admitted murder.

Judge Roderick Evans QC said: “There can only be one sentence – life in prison.”

After the case, Ms George’s mother Marilyn Gullis said: “I hope he stays behind bars for the rest of his life. “I hope he suffers while he is there and I hope they give him a real hard time. “My daughter is destroyed.”
