Teacher, 73, showered boy with gifts before caning his bare bum

A former teacher from the Midlands showered a boy with gifts before sexually assaulting him.

John Fenton, from Staffordshire, caned the victim’s bare bottom.

The 73-year-old’s offences took place over a four-year period.

He reportedly conducted his depraved actions for his own ‘sexual titillation’.

Stafford Crown Court heard Fenton had given the boy small gifts before the abuse started.

Prosecutor Lynette McClement said: “He said, ‘I have given you these, I think we should have some type of payment’.

“The boy thought he was being asked for a cash payment.

“It became clear that this defendant had a cane and an alternative form of payment was being requested.

“His trousers would be pulled down and he was bent over a piece of furniture.

“The victim didn’t really understand what was going on or the importance of what was happening.

“On one occasion, after being caned, the victim was told to strip naked.

“He was made to lie on a bed, face down and his back, bottom and legs were rubbed by the defendant.

“He describes having his head in the bedclothes and crying.

“He describes feeling humiliated.”

The court heard the victim finally reported the abuse when his experiences came to light during unrelated bereavement counselling.

In a statement, he said it had affected his school life and, as an adult, he had endured mental health problems and suicidal thoughts.

Fenton, of Elaine Avenue, Burslem, was arrested in 2018 and admitted three counts of indecent assault on the day of his trial.

The court heard the defendant had worked as a teacher and an electrical and software engineer.

Judge Michael Chambers QC sentenced Fenton to 16 months in prison.

He said: “You groomed the victim by offering various gifts in return for you striking him on the bottom with a cane.

“Although these offences took place some time ago, they have clearly had a lasting effect on him.

“You are an intelligent man and clearly knew what you were doing was wrong.

“These are serious offences and an immediate custodial sentence cannot be avoided.”

Fenton will be on the Sex Offenders’ Register for 10 years.
