Pervert caught with child rape photo told police: ‘I do kiddie porn when I’ve had a drink’

Pervert Roy Edwards was caught with child abuse images – including one of a young girl being raped by a man.

The 71-year-old grandad-of-seven was arrested after police executed a search warrant at his Bucknall home and seized a tablet and mobile phone.

They were examined and the phone was found to contain one category A image – the most serious – three at category B and 38 at category C.

Now Edwards has been handed a three-year community order at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.

Prosecutor Richard McConaghy said the defendant was reported to police by his daughter a few years before his arrest for possessing indecent images of children. He made admissions but his phone had been destroyed so he was not charged.

But police executed a search warrant at his home in Zennor Grove, Bucknall, on April 12 and seized his tablet computer and phone. Nothing of concern was found on the tablet but his phone contained indecent images of children.

In his police interview, the defendant described himself as an alcoholic who ‘did kiddie porn when he had a drink’.

Edwards, of Zennor Grove, Bucknall, pleaded guilty to three offences of making indecent images of children.

As part of the community order Edwards must complete a rehabilitation activity requirement for 25 days and a Maps For Change workbook.

He was placed on the sex offenders’ register for five years and was made the subject of a five-year Sexual Harm Prevention Order which prohibits him from being alone with a child under 16.

Bucknall pensioner guilty of possessing more than 40 child abuse images

A pensioner from Bucknall has been placed on the sex offenders list after being found guilty of possessing indecent images of children.

Roy Edwards, 71, of Zennor Grove, Bucknall, pleaded guilty to the charge at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court and was handed a five-year sexual harm prevention order.

Edwards was found to have more than 40 images of children as young as three on his phone in images which included one girl who appeared to be seriously injured.

Two years before this case came to court, Edwards’ daughter had reported him to police after finding indecent images on his phone.

But no conviction was given after the phone was said to have been destroyed in a skip, the court was told.

Edwards was more likely to download images of children after having a drink and referred to himself as an alcoholic, the court heard.

He had also shared images with others on Whatsapp and Facebook but had recently begun to delete everything he had shared.

Richard Mcconaghy, prosecuting, said: “The images involve children of different ages from very young to teens.”

Police found the images dated from April 1 2016 to April 1 2018, only discovering the phone on April 12, when police searched his home.

Mitigating Jason Holt, said: “He is a man who needs rehabilitation and has accepted that what he has been doing is wrong.

“He needs the help of the Probation Service, something he will not get if he goes to prison.

“His sister sits in the public gallery here supporting him because he acknowledges the problem he has and knows he will suffer the consequences of his actions and repercussions.”

Addressing Edwards, Judge Dean Kershaw said: “The offending has been going on for at least two years.

“I don’t think it is appropriate for someone who is sexually excited looking at young girls and children to be in the presence of a child.”

Speaking about the presence of the defendant’s sister, Judge Kershaw, said: “You have brought your sister to court to hear that her brother has been looking at images like this.

“That is truly disgusting.”

Under the prevention order, Edwards is prohibited to be around anyone under the age of 16 and was told if he breaches this he will be handed a prison sentence.
