Kilmarnock man to return to court for sentencing after being caught with indecent images of children

A 46-year-old man will return to court next month to be sentenced over having indecent images of children.

James Stewart admitted downloading and having the disturbing pictures in his possession between March and June last year.

Kilmarnock Sheriff Court heard on Monday how Stewart was found with 16 still and eight moving category A images – the worst level recorded by police and prosecution services.

That included images depicting the sexual abuse of 10-year olds.

Stewart, of Newlands Drive in Kilmarnock, was also found to have 25 category B images and 48 category C stills.

Prosecuting, Jo Cunningham told the court how Stewart was snared after a police search at his home in June last year.

She also told how previous searches of the property had failed to uncover any evidence of his depravity.

The fiscal depute added: “Officers found a Barracuda hard drive hidden in an Amazon box, a USB stick and pen drives.

“The computer crime unit found the Barracuda hard drive to have three category A videos of children.

“These had been deleted, but were able to be recovered.

“The accused was detained and taken to Kilmarnock Police Station where he admitted owning the items and downloading the images of children.

“He said that only the USB stick had images on it and that he had had access to peer-to-peer sites.”

Stewart was released on bail ahead of his return to court for sentencing on May 29.

He was placed on the sex offenders’ register with immediate effect.
