“I’m not trying to chat you up or anything”: Pervert sexually assaults girl, 14

A 66-year-old man from Peckham sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl on board the Eurostar after ‘chatting her up’ for hours.

Michael Finn of McDermott Road in Southwark preyed on the youngster on board a train from Brussels to St Pancras International.

He sat next to her, introduced himself as ‘Mick’, then said “I’m not trying to chat you up or anything”. The conversation soon made the girl uncomfortable.

The 66-year-old asked her questions about her school, family, and where she lived. Blackfriars Crown Court heard how an hour into the journey Finn asked the girl to write his phone number down. She did so, in her school notebook.

When he asked her to put her number into his phone, she entered a fake number and didn’t put in her surname.

Finn told the girl that she should call him up and he’d take her out and “show her a good time”, suggesting they could go to the beach, have some fish and chips and if she did ever call him up he would give her a set of keys to his house.

Finn leant in and then kissed the girl on her cheek, hugged her and touched her.

The 66-year-old man was placed on the sex offenders register and given a suspended jail sentence at Blackfriars Crown Court on Friday September 4.

PC Mark Sutton said: “This man preyed on this young girl to fulfil his own sexual desires.

It must have been a very frightening experience for her, but I am pleased she had the courage to report the incident and I would like to thank her for coming forward and helping us with the investigation.

“The sentence handed to Finn demonstrates that we do not tolerate any kind of unwanted sexual behaviour on the train network and that we encourage anyone who has experienced such behaviour to report it to us.”
