Judge decides not to jail Crawley paedophile caught with 123,000 child abuse images of pre-teen children

A TWISTED pervert interested in pre-teenage children has avoided jail after downloading more than 120,000 indecent images and videos of children and sharing some of them with other online paedophiles.

Trevor Best was sentenced last Friday having previously pleaded guilty to 12 counts of downloading and distributing indecent images and videos of children.

The 60-year-old, from Maidenbower, admitted downloading 123,111 indecent photos of children in one charge alone.

The indecent material was discovered by police when they searched his home address on December 17 last year.

Ahmed Hossain, prosecuting, told Hove Crown Court: “A warrant was executed and a large number of exhibits were seized.

“Computers, laptops, hard drives and other electrical devices were all recovered.

“More than 100,000 images were found on a laptop and hard drive.

“Further examination revealed a file sharing programme was being used by the defendant and when the history was examined 354 files seemed to have been shared using the programme.

“Police investigated 30 of these files at random and they all contained indecent images of children.

“Videos of children aged between eight and 12 were also discovered.

“When the defendant was arrested he admitted an interest in looking at indecent images and that his preference was pre-teen children rather than those much younger.

“His interest had manifested over a number of years and he said he had sought help.”

The court heard Best, a former security guard at Gatwick Airport, had previously made the guilty pleas on the understanding he had not known at the time files he downloaded were being shared with other people online.

David Jones, defending, said: “This defendant has a history of difficult relationships and started looking at adult material, with other material becoming available to him, but he does not use that as an excuse.

“Since his arrest he has reflected on that lifestyle and he has not accessed any such material since his arrest, the conditions of his bail mean the police have been able to check that.

“He has expressed a determination to never look at this type of material again.”

Judge David Rennie asked the defence solicitor whether Best had stopped looking at child porn because of the fear of being caught and sent to prison, rather than coming to an understanding of how wrong it is.

Mr Jones added: “He has come to the realisation that this material is deprived and opens children to being abused.

“He wants nothing to do with it.

“He was completely unaware at the time that files he downloaded were being distributed through the file sharing programme.

“It was not as though he was willingly sending the images and videos to other people.”

The court heard Best lost his job at Gatwick Airport after being arrested and has been unable to find work since.

Judge Rennie sentenced Best to a two-year prison sentence suspended for two years.

In this time he must complete a sex offenders treatment programme.

Judge Rennie said: “Behaviour like this deserves a prison sentence but if professionals recommend you are suitable for help then there is the argument I should listen to that.

“I hope you realise just how sickening the crimes are that people like you carry out.

“These are children. They should be protected rather than be photographed so people like you can sit in darkened rooms watching.”

The judge added that if the organisers of the treatment programme believe Best cannot complete the course in two years he will be brought back to court and be re-sentenced.

“You will have to work extremely hard and if you slip up I will not hesitate in sending you to prison,” the judge added.

Judge Rennie also imposed a sexual offences prevention order until further notice.

Best, who walked into the dock with a bag of belongings as if prepared for a prison sentence, was also ordered to pay £600 costs.

Crawley paedophile faces jail after downloading 123,000 child abuse images

A TWISTED paedophile, who worked at Gatwick Airport as a security guard, is facing jail after pleading guilty today (Friday) to downloading more than 120,000 images of child abuse.

Sick Trevor Best, from Tillotson Close, Maidenbower, faced 12 charges relating to the downloading and in some cases distributing of indecent photos of children.

He pleaded guilty to all 12 charges.

One of the charges was that he downloaded 123,111 indecent photos of children onto his computer.

Another charge which the 60-year-old admitted was that he possessed 338 child abuse videos.

At Hove Crown Court today he was given conditional bail, until his sentencing on December 19 at the same court.

The judge ordered pre-sentence reports to be put together but he warned Best he was likely to be sent to jail.

Defence solicitor Silas Reid said that his client was “a man of previous good character”, adding that Best has been investigating ways he can get help so he can recover from having his “inclinations” to download child porn.

All the offences are linked to a police search at his home address on December 17 last year.

At a previous hearing prosecutor Mark Kateley said: “A warrant was executed at the address of the defendant, where a huge number of images and videos of varying categories were found on his computer.

“A number of these images and videos had been distributed.”
