Ex-Sithney councillor jailed for molesting young children

Brian Deacon leaving Truro Crown Court.

A FORMER councillor who subjected two young girls to a series of “utterly revolting” sexual assaults has been jailed for five years.

Paedophile Brian Deacon inappropriately touched the girls, who cannot be named for legal reasons, when they were aged under 13, Truro Crown Court heard.

The 71-year-old, who founded Sithney Wrestling Club, pleaded guilty to six counts of sexual assault.

After a trial last month, a jury failed to reach a verdict on a charge that Deacon, a former member of Sithney Parish Council, raped one of the girls, which he had denied.

Deacon, of Par Lane, Par, then asked to be remanded in custody to await a decision on a potential retrial and sentence for the sexual assaults.

The court previously heard how the girl told police about sexual assaults by Deacon and made the rape allegation some months later after suffering from nightmares and speaking to a family member.

On Friday, prosecutor Sally Daulton said the Crown Prosecution Service would not seek a retrial.

Giving evidence, retired Deacon said he had worked on a farm and as a grounds worker for the council. He had also been involved in the St John Ambulance and Cornish wrestling.

Asked by his barrister, Bob Linford, about sexually assaulting the two girls, He said he was sorry and ashamed, but admitted he was sexually attracted to young girls.

At an earlier hearing, Deacon pleaded guilty to four counts of sexual assault on one girl and two in relation to a second girl.

His barrister, Bob Linford, said Deacon had been suffering from anxiety and depression since the allegations came to light and made two attempts on his own life, the second nearly succeeding.

“He had a degree of insight into the harm that he had caused these two little girls and for that he is very sorry,” said Mr Linford, who added that as a result of his “disgusting behaviour”, Deacon’s wife wanted nothing to do with him.

Sentencing Deacon to five years in prison, Judge Christopher Harvey Clark, QC, said: “It hardly needs me to say that your behaviour in sexually molesting [the girls] is utterly revolting to people with normal standards of behaviour.

“To be blunt, you are a paedophile.”

Deacon will have to sign the sex offenders’ register for life

Former parish councillor admits child sex charges

A former parish councillor has pleaded guilty to six charges of sexually touching a girl aged under 13 in Helston.

Brian Deacon, from Merther Close, Sithney, admitted the offences when he appeared before Truro Crown Court last Thursday.

The six offences relate to the sexual assault of girls aged eight and ten years at Helston between 2011 and 2013.

The 69-year-old is due to return to court on March 26 for sentencing.

During this hearing he will also make a plea to a further charge, involving an allegation of rape on a child.

Deacon is a former chairman of Sithney Cornish Wrestling Club, however he no longer has anything to do with the club.

He has also sat as a Sithney parish councillor, for which he was previously representative for Police and Victim Support, together with the Cornwall Association of Local Councils (CALC).
