Helmshore paedophile abused 3 girls – youngest was just 3 – has his jail term cut
A paedophile who subjected three young girls to horrific sexual abuse has convinced top judges to cut his jail term.
David John Bower Tebbs, 57, raped a girl and subjected two other youngsters to sex crimes.
Tebbs, of Brooklands Avenue, Helmshore, was jailed for 15 years by Judge Beverley Lunt at Burnley Crown Court, last November, after a court heard evidence of his shocking crimes.
The court of appeal has now reduced his sentence to 14 years.
He had admitted raping one girl and sexually assaulting two others.
Sentencing Tebbs last year, Judge Lunt said his offences were aggravated by the fact he had attempted to threaten and blackmail the victims to prevent his crimes being revealed. She said: “You showed a gross breach of trust in respect of three young children.”
But this week, three senior judges at London’s Appeal Court upheld a sentence challenge by Tebbs, saying his “full” and immediate confession after his arrest meant his jail term should be cut to 14 years.
Mr Justice Sweeney, sitting with Lord Justice Treacy and Judge Simon Bourne-Arton QC, said: “It seems to us that this is one of those cases where it is appropriate to take into account in mitigation – before discounting for plea – the confession.
“It seems to us that when that factor is taken into account, the total sentence is too long.”
The appeal judge said Tebbs made “a full confession”, on arrest and told the author of a pre-sentence report he “felt disgusted with himself” and “could not believe he had committed such offences”.
Haslingden sex beast who abused 3 girls is jailed – youngest victim was aged just three
A SEX beast who abused three girls nearly 30 years apart is now starting a 15-year jail sentence.
Burnley Crown Court heard that the youngest victim of David Tebbs was aged just three.
Tebbs had got to know the girl’s parents through a Rossendale church and molested her as she stayed overnight in a bedroom, with one of her siblings sleeping nearby.
Prosecutor Jeremy Grout-Smith said that the little girl did tell her mother after it happened, but no action was taken against Tebbs at the time.
He would molest the girl again, 10 years later, as she slept in the same bedroom.
She pretended to be asleep while he groped her. He only left her alone when she pretended to wake up.
The court heard that Tebbs, 57, formerly of Huncoat but now of Brooklands Avenue, Helmshore would go on to seriously sexually abuse two other girls.
He admitted six offences of rape, 12 charges of sexual activity with a child and two indecent assaults.
Jailing him, Judge Beverley Lunt also imposed a sexual offences prevention order, banning him indefinitely from contact with under-16s.
He must also sign the sex offenders’ register for life and was banned from ever working with children or vulnerable adults.
James Heyworth, defending, said Tebbs had written a letter to the court, detailing how disgusted he was with himself.
But his guilty pleas had saved the girls from having to relive their experiences during a trial, added Mr Heyworth.
