Still in denial over child abuse images conviction

The former secretary of a under 7’s football team has narrowly avoided a prison sentence after downloading more than 250 indecent images of children

Adam McCaig, at one point the secretary of the now defunct Kilwinning eagles, searched online for ‘boys naked at beach’ and ‘boy on boy action’ between December 2008 and November 2012

He was put on the sex offenders register in September. But this week neighbours of McCaig who tried to research the case were shocked to find he was still listed as a point of contact for local youth football by both NHS Scotland and North Ayrshire council

Kilmarnock sheriff court heard that on 2nd October, 2012 the national centre for missing and exploited children received information that an internet user linked to a specific IP address had accessed the internet and uploaded 10 indecent images of children to a sky drive

As a result police obtained a warrant to search McCaig’s home

They were met at the door by McCaig who was at home with his family. A search of the house  was carried out and items including a compaq hard drive, two toshiba laptops and a digital camera were recovered

When these were searched, a total of 150 indecent images of children were found, revealing McCaig, in  the words of the prosecutor fiscal, ” a predilection with a specific interest in boys in swimwear”, although some pictures were of young girls

The images, for which most were from a Russian website included some at the highest levels of indecency

Officers searching his computers found evidence that he had downloaded a total of 279 images of children, though 129 had been deleted

McCaig of David Gage street returned for sentencing last week, when the court heard he had already lost his job because of the conviction

The 59 year old husband and father was described as a man ‘in denial’ about his crime and the reasons behind it

He was sentenced to three years on supervision as a direct alternative to a prison sentence. As part of his community payback order he will also be required to participate in a sex offender work group
