A WIGAN pervert jailed for his involvement in a paedophile ring has had an appeal against his sentence thrown out.
One of the crimes for which 56-year-old Phillip Skitt was convicted involved encouraging the rape of a three-year-old girl.
Skitt, pictured, of Orrell Road, Orrell, had also secretly filmed a naked 15-year-old girl and offered to show a co-accused the footage in an online conversation.
He was jailed for eight years, with an extended three-year licence period, after admitting two counts of encouraging a sexual offence, five of taking indecent photographs of a child, and one of voyeurism.
At the Court of Appeal this week Skitt tried to challenge the length of his sentence. But judges dismissed the bid, saying the crown court judge was “entitled” to find he was a dangerous offender.
A co-accused of Skitt, however, did earn a cut in sentence.
Joseph John Hawley filmed himself molesting and raping the youngster and streamed the footage on the internet.
It was watched by a former deputy headteacher and Skitt, who had both encouraged Hawley to carry out the horrific abuse.
Hawley, 39, of Boundary Street, Bolton, was handed imprisonment for public protection – which is almost identical to a life sentence – at Liverpool Crown Court in October last year.
He was ordered to serve at least eight years behind bars before his release can even be considered by the Parole Board, after admitting 20 sickening offences.
But his minimum term was reduced to six years and eight months by the appeal court judge, who said the original sentence was “too long”.
The court heard the crimes came to light following an international investigation into internet chatrooms by the National Child Exploitation Co-ordination Centre in Canada.
