Boys were molested

A PAEDOPHILE from Brownsover lured young boys into his trust and molested them during a 30-year period when he worked as a door-to-door salesman.

David Edward Bibb, 64, of Ambleside, was sentenced to four years in prison at Warwick Crown Court after pleading guilty to six counts of indecently assaulting three boys under the age of 16.

Bibb was a family friend to each of the boys and they saw him as a surrogate father figure.

During police interviews, Bibb has said it was ‘just a friendship that developed’, and that ‘touching boys did not seem wrong.’

The first charge dated back to 1964, when an eight-year-old boy accompanied Bibb on his rounds as a door-to-door salesman.

This progressed to Bibb sharing a shower and a bed with the boy and touching his genitalia.

The second child became known to Bibb in the late 1970s, when the boy’s parents began buying items from him. When the boy was about 12, Bibb would turn up at his school and take him back to his house.

At one point, when the boy was about 13, Bibb began playing with the boy’s genitalia as he lay in Bibb’s lap.

The boy also went on holiday to Bibb’s caravan in the Lake District, and it was during this time that Bibb performed oral sex on the boy.

The third boy even referred to Bibb as Dad for a period of time during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and visited his caravan during the school holidays.

When the boy was about 10 years old he regularly visited Bibb’s house at weekends and stayed overnight.

Again, this progressed to the boy lying naked on Bibb’s bed and on one occasion Bibb performed oral sex.

Shahzad Aziz, defending, said: “The defendant has recognised that what he has done is wrong. He apologises to everyone concerned and he now recognises he shouldn’t have done it and recognises that he should be punished.

“The first case of prison is difficult for anyone but for someone of 64 it must be particularly harsh.”

Giving his verdict, Judge James Pyke said: “You were targeting vulnerable families.

“Offences of this nature are so severe that only a custodial sentence can be justified.”

On his release, Bibb will be placed on the Sex Offenders’ Register indefinitely and will be disqualified from having any employment that involves working with children.
