Jail for pensioner who abused girl 30 years ago

A child molester has been jailed for 27 months for sexually assaulting a girl more than 30 years ago.

Ronald Keogh, 73, of Stanley Grove, West Croydon, appeared at Croydon Crown Court on January 8, charged with more than 20 counts of sexual molestation. He pleaded guilty to four charges and ordered to sign the sex offenders register for 10 years.

The charges against Keogh, of New Addington, dates back over 30 years to when his victim was eight years old. He molested the girl for more than five years and it was only in 2006 that she had built up the courage to come forward about her experience, police said.

According to a Metropolitan police spokesman the remainder of the offences have been placed on file.

The Met Police spokesman said: “Unfortunately because of the way the law works Mr Keogh had to be sentenced in line with sentencing from the early 70s when the offences took place.

“Had this happened today he would have been looking at serving a more substantial amount of time in jail.”

Investigating officer, Christopher Wilson of Camberwell’s Child Abuse Investigation Team said: “If Keogh had offended like this after 2003 he would have been looking at between seven and 11 years for what he did.

“The very fact that the judge gave Keogh, who is in ill-health and 73-years-old, half of the maximum sentence from the 1956 Sexual Offences Act shows how seriously this case was taken and speaks volumes. The sentence that Keogh was given is a reflection of the Metropolitan police‘s determination to protect the young and the vulnerable.”
